Obstetric Patient Safety Officers
At NYU Langone Health, we offer comprehensive, around-the-clock obstetric care, ensuring the safest possible birth experience for you and your baby. Experienced obstetricians known as obstetric (OB) patient safety officers provide continuous oversight of patients on the labor and delivery units of NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital in Manhattan and NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn.
Our program is the only one of its kind in the United States to offer an additional layer of staff support, day and night.
Supporting Your Birth Experience
Our OB patient safety officers are board-certified obstetricians with decades of experience in labor and delivery. Rather than serving individual patients, these onsite professionals oversee the care of all pregnant people on the labor floor, offering real-time clinical expertise and responding quickly when additional medical support is needed.
Because every birth is different, having an experienced obstetrician available 24/7 helps us respond to changing needs. Our model ensures additional safety and personalized attention for every patient—in routine and complex situations.
Our OB patient safety officers work closely with your clinical team, including nurses, midwives, and your primary obstetrician. For women with high-risk pregnancies, who make up approximately 10 to 20 percent of our deliveries, we also collaborate with specialists in maternal–fetal medicine.
Our Labor and Delivery Services
During labor, your care is led by your obstetrician or midwife. Our OB patient safety officers work in partnership with your provider to ensure that every aspect of your birth is as safe and seamless as possible.
If complications arise, they are available immediately to assist with advanced procedures such as cesarean deliveries or assisted vaginal births, including vacuum extraction or forceps deliveries. They also provide second opinions, offer direct care when requested by your provider, and help coordinate the broader medical team to maintain clear communication and smooth transitions throughout your labor.
