Prostate Â鶹ÊÓƵapp Recovery & Support

At NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Â鶹ÊÓƵapp Center, we are committed to helping you feel as comfortable as possible from diagnosis to treatment and throughout recovery from prostate cancer.

Living with a prostate cancer diagnosis often involves preventing and managing various symptoms and side effects. Our comprehensive support services address the physical, psychological, and social changes associated with prostate cancer and treatments. Services can include sexual rehabilitation, therapeutic counseling, nutritional support, and follow-up care and education.

Sexual Rehabilitation After Surgery and Radiation Therapy

Most men who have prostatectomy or radiation therapy for prostate cancer experience some decrease in erectile function. Erectile dysfunction can last anywhere from a few months to a few years. The duration depends on your age, the level of erectile function before treatment, and whether the nerves controlling erectile function were affected.

Our sexual rehabilitation specialists work with patients and their partners to develop the best plan for minimizing any post-treatment dysfunction. This may involve the use of medications or assistive devices, such as an erection device or penile prosthesis. Our doctors may also prescribe medication that includes sildenafil (Viagra) and tadalafil (Cialis) to help restore erectile function.

Our researchers were the first to show that phosphodiesterase inhibitors, such as Viagra and Cialis, can help restore erectile function.

Urinary Incontinence

After prostate cancer surgery, it is normal to experience temporary light urinary incontinence—the involuntary leakage of urine. In most cases, patients regain the ability to control their bladder within a few weeks. Our experts may recommend pelvic floor strengthening exercises to speed up recovery and improve bladder control.

Integrative Healthcare

Many people with prostate cancer benefit from integrative medicine that combines conventional and natural therapies. Our team of integrative health specialists sees men during all stages of treatment, including those who choose active surveillance, those who have had surgery, and those who are returning for a second course of treatment.

Our doctors work with patients to determine the best options for relieving physical and emotional stress and easing the potential side effects of treatment. Integrative therapies can include yoga, massage, and acupuncture, a form of Chinese medicine that involves the painless insertion of hair-thin needles to provide balance and relieve pain.

Psychotherapy

The pain and side effects associated with prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment can cause a variety of complex emotions. Patients may experience frustration and irritability, embarrassment, and anxiety. Psychotherapy is often an important step in the healing process.

Our doctors can refer you to a psychotherapist for additional support. In some cases, patients and their sexual partners may participate in joint therapy sessions, allowing couples to address concerns about intimacy and overall quality of life.

Prostate Â鶹ÊÓƵapp Support

Individual counseling, referrals to local resources, and educational events are available to help men adjust to life during and after treatments for prostate cancer.

Counseling and Events

We host educational events to help men and their partners address any concerns after prostate cancer treatments.

Prostate cancer patients at NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Â鶹ÊÓƵapp Center can attend virtual support group meetings, where they can connect with others with similar experiences. This can help patients feel less alone, cope with their symptoms, and gain practical advice for various challenges related to cancer treatment and recovery.

Nutrition Services

Proper nutrition is an important part of cancer treatment, recovery, and prevention. While it is common to experience weight loss and weakness during treatment, it is possible to counter the effects of malnutrition with proper guidance. Our registered oncology dietitians work with you to optimize your diet and provide nutrition education and counseling.

Follow-Up Care

After completing treatment for prostate cancer, patients transition to a personalized, continuing-care plan. This typically includes follow-up screenings and tests, assistance coping with long-term side effects, and education about signs of recurrence.

Your follow-up schedule will depend on the type of treatment you received and their overall health at the end of treatment. In most cases, you attend appointments every three to four months during the first two to three years after treatment. From that point, you may have one or two appointments each year.

During follow-up appointments, doctors conduct a physical exam and blood tests. You should report any new symptoms at these visits. By keeping an open dialogue with providers, patients can address concerns and long-term side effects from prostate cancer treatment.
